Colnago knows a thing or two about drop-bar off-road bikes, even though most think of them as a road-only brand….thanks Pogačar.

Let’s not forget that legends like Sven Nys and Niels Albert rode the Colnago Prestige — the same with a very young Wout Van Aert. The Prestige would eventually fade out of the Colnago line. The World Cup and World Title winning machine was replaced with the gravel/cyclocross-focused Colnago G-3X.

The G-3X is more of a gravel bike than a pure ‘cross-machine, but it does have that iconic Colnago kick and more tire clearance than the Prestige ever had.

In recent years, though, Colnago has put effort into re-thinking their business’s gravel side. Adding to it, they have created something pure Colnago. A performance-focused gravel bike. One that looks at home on the white roads of Tuscany or on twisty American single track (more on that later). Plus, it’s handmade in Italy.

What is the Colnago C Series

The C series is a moniker for the top tier of Colnago bikes; the more attainable version for most is the ‘V’ series. The C68 bikes are handmade in Italy and aim to balance beauty and performance. The Colnago C68 Series of bikes boasts a Road, All-Road, Titanium Custom, and now a Gravel bike.

Colnago describes the C Series as: “C for Carbon, Colnago, Cambiago (where the bikes are made), and Class. The 68 represents how far Colnago has come since its founding in 1954.”

Colnago C68 Gravel Frame Details

There’s much to unpack here, so let’s start with the frame creation. First, the Colnago C68 is 100% hand-made from high-modulus carbon fiber. Some parts are lugged, making it also a modular frame.

What does Colnago mean by ‘modular’?

The C68 Gravel is comprised of six separate carbon pieces. The engineers designed the headtube/downtube and top tube junction to be maneuverable when building the frame. The tubes are lugged and modular, as the builder can move them slightly, augmenting the stack slightly, the same as the headtube height.

This method is only used on the C series frames, though Colnago has used lugged carbon construction since the 1980s. The lugged tubes give the C68 Gravel a unique look, and the matte green pearl paint (similar to the Aston Martin) accentuates the curves.

How much does it weigh?

The frameset’s claimed weight is 1,150g for a medium (480mm) C68 frameset. The weight includes everything (framewise), including the rear derailleur hanger and seatpost wedge. 480g of the overall weight is attributed to an uncut, painted fork.

Yes to Top Tube Bag But No Third Bottle

As for modern gravel bits, the C68 has a top tube bag mount and can fit two large bottles (think 38oz) in the frame. There is no third bottle mount under the frame, so if you’re planning a super long, unsupported ride, you’ll need to plan accordingly.

The tube shaping in the C68 Gravel is designed for power transfer, minimizing road chatter, and handling a flying rock to the down tube without cracking.

The frame uses a D-shaped seatpost similar to the one on the G-3X but with an updated tightening mechanism.

The bottom bracket is a T47, the same as the C68 All Road.

The frame is optimized for a fully electronic groupset but can run a mechanical 1X like the new Shimano GRX 12-speed. The placeholder for a front derailleur is a neat 3D-printed cover, which takes nothing away in performance but adds cool points.

The chain guard is also 3D-printed and pictures the mountains of Italy.

Colnago Gravel Geometry

Though the C68 shares some features of the Prestige, All Road, and G-3X, it has a unique geometry. It has a shorter reach and higher stack than the C68 Road. The updated reach-stack ratio allows for a shorter stem, giving the bike a lively feel on the trails and lots of control over the front end.

Colnago C68 Gravel Geo

C68 Gravel will be available in 5 sizes, all in sloping configuration: 450 (52cm), 480 (54cm), 510 (58cm), 540 (60cm), and 570 (63cm)

Colnago feels this setup offers better handling for challenging gravel or trail features without sacrificing an aggressive setup. I agree after spending some hours on the bike.

The Colnago CC.01 wide bar/stem combo riffs off the new C68 gravel geometery. The new Wide version of the CC.01 is specifically designed for gravel. The Colnago CC.01 Wide has more flare than the road version of the Colnago CC.01. The reach is 72.50 mm and a drop of 120mm with a stem angle of 82 degrees.

The Colnago CC.01 Wide is available in five different stem combinations with the same 40 hood and 46 wide at the drop: 80mm – 40/46, 90mm – 40/46, 100mm – 40/46, 110mm – 40/46, and 120mm – 40/46. The C68 Gravel complete bike arrives with the Colnago CC.01 Wide cockpit but is compatible with a traditional bar/stem combination.

Colnago C68 Gravel JV bottom bracket
The tube shapes are sharper at the edge, closer to the look of the Colnago C68 road machine.(Photos: Jordan Villella/Bikerumor)

How about tire clearance?

When I asked about tire clearance, the Colnago team calmly stated, “Up to 42mm but it performs best with the 40s”. Why not 50mm or something more extensive like the trend? The team told me, “This isn’t that kind of gravel bike.” The C68 is a fast bike designed around a more aggressive riding style, leaning more toward the gravel-road/racing side.

It’s the same reason you’ll find no internal storage on the C68 Gravel. The team didn’t want to compromise on the bike’s silhouette or the tubes’ integrity. I admire the choice not to follow the trends and to keep the design focused on speed, handling, and beauty.

Colnago C68 Gravel JV bb non drive

Now, the team says 42mm is the max, but that is the maximum for the rear tire. If you want to push the limits, you can get a larger tire in the front. But the fork is more sculpted than some, and you could run into mud clearance issues if you run bigger. The frame can fit gravel suspension forks if you’d like…but like the super wide tires and internal storage box — that might not be this kind of bike.

Colnago C68 Gravel Builds and Paint Options

Currently, the C68 will come available as a frame and fork or in three different build options. The builds range from SRAM Red XPLR, Force XPLR, and Shimano GRX 822 mechanical.

Paint-wise, the new Colnago C68 Gravel will be available in Green Pearl (in most photos) or gloss black with red undertones in the sun. Having seen the paint up close, both are great options (I’m a glossy fan), but the Green Pearl should hide the scratches and abuse of gravel riding better.

Colnago NFC Tag

Like other Colnago bikes, the new C68 will have a near-field communication or (NFC) tag. The tag is linked to the MyLime Polygon Blockchain and is inextricably linked to the bicycle.

How does this help the rider? If your bike gets stolen, you can use the NFC as proof of ownership. The NFC also helps with re-sale and helps prevent (or disrupt) counterfeit Colnago bikes from entering the market. For more info, check out Colnago’s explanation of why they chose to be the first bicycle company to adopt Blockchain here.

Never one to miss a beat on new groups, the Kogel Kolossos GRX gives you an oversized pulley cage option for Shimano’s latest 12-speed GRX gravel group.

It uses a similar alloy cage construction as their others, but Kogel says this is their stiffest cage design yet. Inside are a 14-tooth upper pulley and 18-tooth lower, both rolling on ceramic bearings with low-drag road seals. Switch to their ‘cross seals for wet riding conditions.

kogel kolossos GRX oversize pulley cage colors

The overall length of the Kolossos is within a few mm of the stock cage, so ground clearance remains similar, but you may need to add a bit of chain length, depending on your setup. Stock Shimano GRX RX820 derailleur pulleys both have 13 teeth, so the Kolossos GRX kit will require more chain wrap.

It comes in gold, red, and black. MSRP $475, available now.

With a short-nose shape just updated this past autumn, a new Fizik Argo X1 level of the gravel & off-road racing saddle sheds weight with a carbon rail upgrade. I’ve been riding & training on this saddle in 2 different spec levels for almost half a year, and it’s hard to argue with…

Fizik revamped their short-nosed road Vento Argo saddles for more off-road riding & racing with the Vento Argo X a couple of months ago. But now gravel, cyclocross, and even cross-country mountain bike racers can opt for a new lighter Argo X1 with carbon rails.

Built for fast-paced off-road riding, the Fizik Argo X rounds off all the corners of its road sibling, keeping the gently curved top that is comfortable as you move around on the bike. Then, it adds a shade thicker foam, a flatter nose to perch on for steep climbs, and a reshaped ergonomic cutout for improved comfort over bumpy terrain. so your crotch doesn’t get caked in mud. Plus, that cutout gets a rubber mud flap so your crotch doesn’t get caked in grime.

Now you can get it with chromoly, titanium, or… carbon rails.

Riding Impressions

Fizik Vento Argo X1 off-road gravel racing saddle Review, new carbon rails upgrade, riding to gravel

Even though it was only officially introduced last November, I’ve actually been riding the revamped Argo X since last summer on the latest Canyon Grail CF SLX, with ti rails. And now, the new carbon-railed Fizik Argo X1 is sitting on my cross bike. Strapped to my indoor trainer for a little warm-up vibes before CX Worlds this coming weekend.

Fizik Vento Argo X1 off-road gravel racing saddle Review, new carbon rails upgrade, on the trainer

The feel is exactly the same on both bikes. And that’s a good thing. The saddle has firm but supportive padding. Its fiber-reinforced shell is plenty stiff. But then, there’s still a bit of compliant flex in its wings, to not feel unyielding when pedaling. And the large central cutout prevents any undue pressure. While the small mud flap then keeps road & trail spray off my butt, with a tiny vent slit that lets a little airflow through and allows rainwater to drain out on those wettest rides.

Fizik Vento Argo X1 off-road gravel racing saddle Review, new carbon rail version 140mm wide 195g actual weight

The X1 & X3 share identical construction, but for the material of the rails. That’s a great feature in my book. As it means you can pick the model you prefer based on price, weight, and compatibility with your seatpost. My 140mm X1 weighs three grams more than claimed, at an actual 195g.

In my mind, you wouldn’t go wrong with any of the three spec-levels.

Whisky Parts No.9 MCX+1 carbon fork hero

Today, Minnesota’s Whisky Parts release a new carbon fork, the No.9 MCX+. And it looks pretty forkin’ sweet. This No.9 MCX+ gravel bike fork is the latest addition to their current line of premium carbon products. Like the Scully Bar released last Summer, this new fork is a dapper addition.

(Photo/Whisky Parts)

This new carbon wonder fork has been designed to give those who ride gravel suspension forks a lighter-weight and more versatile fork option. To help keep the bike’s geometry in check, the MCX+ runs a long suspension-corrected 430mm axle to crown measurement, allowing it to replace the typical 40-50mm gravel-travel suspension fork.

Gravel & adventure-type riders will be happy to know that the middle-of-dirtroad 47.5mm offset will play well when it comes to fork trail, toe clearance, fenders, or running a rack with some panniers attached.

Whisky Parts No.9 MCX+1 carbon fork crown and dropouts green

Whisky Parts says the new fork has great max tire clearance with the ability to roll with 29 x 2.3″ or 27.5 x 2.4″ MTB rubber. Using lightweight carbon construction, the MCX+ is spaced for 12x100mm thru-axles and uses flat-mounting for the disc brake calipers. The new fork is ASTM-rated at condition 3, which means that it’s ready for some rowdy off-road behavior.

It sports Three-Pack mounts (3kg per side), low rider mounts (7.5kg per side), and internal dynamo wire routing. Bob’s yer Uncle! It’s time to embrace the dynamo power!

Oh, and, let’s not forget those fender mounts, ’cause the MCX+ has those, as well.

Super.

Let’s sum up some of the MCX+ specs/features.

Italian tubing and component maker Columbus has an all-new Trittico system of carbon bars, stem & fork developed to bring modern fully internal cable routing to the custom handmade bike market. Designed to fit inside a conventional 1 1/8″ upper headset cup, the Columbus Trittico features a unique Trefoil fork steerer tube that outperforms many other shaped steerers. Plus, a creative stem solution delivers unmatched cockpit adjustability, without messing with your brake lines…

Columbus Trittico carbon cockpits integrate handmade bikes

The idea behind these new Columbus Components carbon Trittico parts was simple. Give handmade bikes the option to build fully internal cable routing with existing tubing – specifically headtube – sizing.

Columbus Hyperion titanium bicycle frame tubing

Columbus sells a lot of steel and (increasingly) titanium tubesets to custom frame builders. And even though most of those now use so-called ‘oversized’ tubing diameters relative to old school 1″ steel tubes. We’re still talking about a maximum 44mm headtube for tapered 1.5-1.125″ steerer tubes.

While oversized carbon bikes can often get away with going to a massive 1.5″ upper headset cup to fit shift & brake lines inside. Metal bikes start to look weird with bigger headtubes.

Columbus Trittico carbon cockpit for internal cable routing, no cables

So, Trittico means keeping whatever 1 1/8″ upper headset cup you prefer. And routing cables inside it. Electronic shifting only though, so we’re only talking about internal routing of hydraulic brake lines, or electronic wires on older groupsets.

How does it work?

Columbus Trittico carbon cockpit for internal cable routing, Futura Trefoil fork detail
(Renderings & Illustrations/Columbus)

To make that fit, Columbus developed a new Trefoil steerer tube shape for their own full carbon forks. Their patent-pending design lops off the front 2 corners of the carbon fork steerer for the cables to slip down into the frame. And of course requires a proprietary expander to go inside.

Columbus Trittico carbon cockpit for internal cable routing, Trefoil steerer tube detail

As compared to similar 1.125″ internal routing solutions with D-shaped or I-shaped steerers, the Columbus Trefoil design is uncompromisingly stiffer both front-to-back AND resisting lateral forces.

Unmatched integrated cockpit adjustability

Now, it is relatively straight-forward to route just a couple of hydro brake lines inside a separate bar and stem, assuming the correct size routing holes all line up. But Columbus goes one step further with their carbon Trittico stem. Here, they use a oversized steerer clamp diameter, and fill out that space with an alloy sleeve spacer.

The result, one -8° stem can be adjusted in length by 5mm and its angle by 5°. All without removing any hoses. The regular black steerer sleeve can be left in its 0 position, or rotated 180° to offset stem length by +5mm. Or swap in the red -5° angled insert sleeve, which keeps the original stem length, but lowers the handlebar creating an effective -13° stem angle.

That sleek carbon stem gets a removable alloy faceplate with hidden 3-bolts, and hidden GPS mount. So you get both streamlined looks and real-world ease-of-use.

Columbus Trittico fully integrated carbon cockpit components for custom handmade bikes, bar & stem

Combine it with ergonomically-shaped “Smart Fit” handlebars, and you can fine-tune your cockpit positioning, exactly as you prefer. Columbus gives their Trittico carbon bars unique shaping. With a divot for extra space behind the lever for more secure braking from the hoods – especially for riders with small hands who’ve adjusted their lever reach – and triangulated shaped drops for extra grip while sprinting.

425g with 32mm tire clearance (367mm axle-crown, 45mm rake), flat mount 160mm (or 180mm) brake rotor compatibility, and a magnetic cover to hide the front mounting bolts.

There also will be a Trittico-compatible Futura Trefoil Gravel fork with bigger 700c x 57mm tire clearances, anything cage & fender mounts, and dynamo wiring routing. The Futura Trefoil Gravel fork gets a 405mm a-c and adjustable 47/52mm offset, at a claimed 565g.

Trittico component specs & sizing

The carbon Trittico stems are customizable in both length and angle with their adjustable steerer tube sleeve. The 5 sizes are 90-130mm (in 10mm steps) with the standard -8° stem angle. Rotate the stock black steerer sleeve 180° to offset length +5mm. It keeps the -8° angle, but shifts the stem lengths to 95-135mm. Or an optional red angled -5° insert sleeve keeps the original lengths, but lowers the front handlebar clamping area to create a -13° angle.

Columbus also created a direct out-front GPS/GoPro mount. Called the Race Spoon, it mounts to 2 bolts on the bottom of the Trittico stem.

The Trittico carbon road bars come in 40/42/44cm widths at the hoods, with subtle 4° flare in the drops (below the levers) for an extra 2.7cm of width (center-center) at the ends. The 31.8mm bars feature 71mm reach and 128mm drop, with a claimed weight of 215g.

Wider carbon Trittico gravel bars will add more dramatic 15° flare. Plus, they feature an extra ergonomic loop at the ends of the drops, yet only a shade heavier at 225g. The 75mm reach/110mm drop gravel bars will also come in 40/42/44cm at the hoods. But, in the end, 11cm wider at the drops thanks to the flare and further 4° oustweep at the ends.

There’s also a matching carbon Trittico seatpost to finish out your contact points. It’s available in 27.2 or 31.6mm diameter (200g or 210g). The seatpost features swappable 2-bolt head guts for 15mm or 25mm offset, round or carbon rail compatibility, and an asymmetric carbon shaft layup for optimal rider comfort.

Columbus Trittico – Options, Pricing & Availability

Columbus designed the Trittico cockpit system as an integration solution for custom handmade bike builders. So for now, your best bet it to buy a new custom road bike. Then, tell your frame builder that this is what you want. Columbus says a number of builders are already using the Trittico system. Beyond the Jaegher bikes I photographed above, you can also already find Trittico-equipped bikes from Barco, Beach Club, Belle, Bixxis, Cinelli, Condor, Festka, Ioklin, Legot, Onguza, Passoni, Repete, Stelbel, Titici, Victoire, Wittson, and more.

Officially, only the road bike series with the Futura Trefoil road fork has launched so far. But Columbus shared renderings with us of a gravel series with a Futura Trefoil Gravel fork and flared carbon bar. And we’ve seen the gravel product names already pop up with some distributors. Those likely are already making their way to bike builders early this year.

As for aftermarket retrofit installation into your existing bikes… Columbus has a “Pre-Order Now” contact form on their microsite for consumers looking to buy the Trittico system components. But we’ve also seen the individual components already being offered online separately. With fork prices around 475€, stems/seatposts/bars for around 420€.

Pilot releases the first-ever gravel bike with Pinion's electronic shifting gearbox, paired with Gates Belt Drive for a virtually maintenance-free adventure bike!

The new Pilot Scram Pinion is the world’s first gravel bike with Pinion’s electronic Smart.Shift gear box. And it’s paired with Gates’ CDX Belt Drive and titanium frame for ultra-low maintenance all around.

Pinion’s Smart.Shift debuted in 2022 for e-bikes, pulling power from their battery. Then in 2023, they launched this standalone unit with it’s own battery and Priority Cycles launched the first mountain bike with it that summer. This is the first drop bar bike to use it.

The system combines Pinion’s internally geared gearbox at the cranks with electronic shifting, overcoming the original’s drawback of requiring two cables running from the shifter, replacing them with a single wire.

It’s housed in a custom titanium shell, beautifully integrated into this frame’s design.

For drop bar bikes, it’s paired with TRP HyWire shifters and brakeset, which is a gamechanger for ergonomics compared to the mechanical twist shifter. Both brake hoses and the shift wires run internally through the frame, with a small charging port on the downtube.

Pilot is using the Pinion C-line model with 12-speeds and rapid 0.2-second shifts. It can shift under load or at a standstill. You can even program a “starting gear” that it’ll automatically return to when you come to a stop, making take-off easier and at just the right cadence.

The bike uses sliding dropouts to tension the belt drive, with a bolt-together frame brake on the driveside seatstay.

The completely sealed gearbox and maintenance-free belt drive makes it a perfect adventure bike, and it has triple bottle bosses on the seat tube and both sides of the downtube, giving you plenty of storage options…

…plus rack and fender mounts on the rear. Swap out the fork for something with Anything Cage mounts (or add Old Man Mountain’s new Axle Pack kit) and you’re ready for bikepacking.

It’ll be available as a frameset (€4,200) and complete bike (from €8,250) with the following spec:

  • Wheelset: OHR G2 / G45
  • Handlebar: Ritchey Venturemax
  • Seatpost: Ritchey 2-Bolt
  • Frame finish: Brushed Frame with Sandblasted Logos / custom logos
  • Fork: Pilot Carbon Gravel
  • Brakes and shifters: TRP HyWire

Aimed at road and gravel cyclists, the new Ritchey Logic Cabrillo saddle gives them their first short-and-wide saddle design. While it looks very much like a traditional saddle, the dimensions don’t lie.

The Cabrillo comes in two versions, WCS and Comp. Both use Ritchey’s Vector Wing shell design, which isolates the rails from the top, creating a flex zone to suspend the rider without making the saddle squishy.

The Cabrillo WCS gets a nylon & carbon shell with stainless steel rails and lightweight polyurethane foam padding. It weighs 222g and costs $99.95.

The Cabrillo Comp gets a nylon & glass fiber shell with chromoly rails and standard foam padding. Weight is 266g, price is $59.95.

ritchey cabrillo saddle dimensions chart

It’s mildly short compared to some other brands, measuring 260mm long. That’s 18mm shorter than their Streem saddle.

The top profile is flat from tip to tail, making it easier to slide fore/aft on the saddle over technical terrain, which makes it perfect for cyclocross. A slight curve from side to side mimics other popular short-and-wide designs to offer good sit bone support without hindering hip and leg movement.

The unisex design has a slim center channel to reduce pressure on the perineal area. Available now.
