Did you wake up this morning and think “Man, I wish I had an affordable bike that I could use as a ‘get-a-round’ commuter bike”? Kona Bicycles may’ve heard that thought, as it introduced the Kona Coco, an affordable, European-styled, year-round commuter. Just what you wanted!

The Coco is an elegantly designed step-through bicycle that pays homage to the European commuters we are all familiar with. Equipped with full-length fenders (with mudflaps), and internal cable routing providing a clean aesthetic, the Kona Coco inspires you to get started on that commuter dream.

This handsome step-through comes spec’d with a Shimano 9-speed drivetrain, hydraulic brakes, puncture-resistant tires, and an included kickstand, making it a great choice for a worry-free commute.

Slap a basket on the Coco, paired with a nice bag, and you’ve elevated it from a neighborhood bike/commuter to a utilitarian, errand-grabbing, pick-up groceries on-the-way home kind of bike.

The step-through, European commuter bikes are fantastic, and useful tools to encourage us all to ride more and drive less. And the Kona Coco makes it really easy at this price point to take the “commuter plunge” and give it a try.

Still think a bike without a dynamo hub and lights shouldn’t be touted as a commuter bike these days, but that’s just the European in me I guess.

Rechargeable lights are so good and so cheap now. I don’t think a dynamo is necessary plus that would add like $500 to the price

Love that this bike comes with Schrader valves!

I agree that dynamo lighting would be nice, but higher-end commuter bikes are a tough sell for most shops. Dynamo lights (or fenders, or anything, really) that adds complexity to the bike build process are a hard sell to most shops, since it’ll be mostly entry-level wrenches assembling them. At $700 retail, like this bike is, there would be barely any margin after a junior tech fumbled to install commuter accessories like a rack/fenders/dynamo. Any more accessories bundled with the bike means more potential warranty claims for the manufacturer.
